The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
