No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
